Porta Potty, Dumpster & Storage Container Rental in Norristown

Norristown is the county seat, a river town of rowhomes and twins built out a century ago and now being rehabbed block by block, with the courthouse and the county offices at its center, Main Street and DeKalb Street turning over storefronts, and the riverfront along the Schuylkill being remade. It's the one Montgomery County town that works like a Philadelphia neighborhood: narrow lots, no driveways on most blocks, and a dumpster that usually has to sit in the street. Across the line in East and West Norriton the lots open up and the box goes in the driveway. We deliver porta potties, roll-off dumpsters and storage containers to all of it, on one quote and one invoice, with the municipality's rules worked into the plan.

Where We Work in and Around Norristown

The Work That Keeps Norristown Busy

  • Rowhome & Twin Rehabs

Plaster, lath, old plumbing and three layers of flooring leaving through the front door of a hundred-year-old house. A 20 yard box at the curb, a unit for the crew, and a schedule that gets the box off the block as soon as it's full.

  • Downtown Conversions

Offices becoming apartments, storefronts becoming restaurants, upper floors coming back into use near the courthouse and the station. Short rentals, tight loading zones and a property manager's clock.

  • Riverfront & Township Construction

Ground-up apartment buildings on the riverfront and additions across East and West Norriton, where the lot takes a container and the restroom count follows the crew.

Norristown's Rules: Licensed Haulers and Clear Streets

Norristown has two rules that matter more than a street permit. The first is in its Solid Waste chapter: nobody collects or transports waste generated in the municipality, demolition and construction debris included, without a hauler license from the Municipality of Norristown, with a separate permit for each truck, running March through February. Roll-off and dumpster trucks are specifically allowed under that license, so the hauler that picks up your box has to hold it, and it's one of the things we settle before we quote a Norristown job. The second is in the Streets chapter: after a snow or ice storm, nothing can sit in a street that gets in the way of the municipality's plows, and Public Works can remove anything that does without owing anyone for it. A box at the curb in January is set with that in mind and pulled before a storm if the forecast calls for it. Any opening or excavation in a Norristown street needs a permit from the Public Works Director, and the municipality holds contractors in its rights-of-way to PennDOT's standards. On private property, a driveway or a lot, none of the street rules apply; East Norriton and West Norriton are separate townships with their own codes for their own streets. Tell us the address and whether it's the street or the lot, and we'll tell you what applies. See Dumpster Rental in Philadelphia for sizes, and put a porta potty and a storage container on the same quote.

A Rowhome Town Outside the City

Norristown's housing stock looks like Philadelphia's because it was built at the same time for the same reason: mill and factory workers walking to jobs along the river. The result is a town of narrow rowhomes and twins on 16- to 20-foot lots, many with a rear alley too tight for a truck and a front that opens straight onto the sidewalk. That's the placement problem the suburbs around Norristown don't have, and it decides everything about a job here. The dumpster goes at the curb in front of the house, in a parking space the neighbors are also counting on, and it stays only as long as the demolition does. We size it to the block: a 10 or 20 yard box fits a parking space, a 30 doesn't, and a 40 is out of the question on a rowhome street.

The porta potty question is the same one South Philly asks. Early in a gut rehab the unit goes on the sidewalk against the house or in the front yard if there is one, and once the first floor is open it moves inside the shell, with a path kept clear for the service truck's hose from the street. On a block with a usable rear alley, the back is better: out of the neighbors' sight and off the sidewalk.

Containers are the exception on these blocks. A 20 foot box takes two parking spaces for a month, and Norristown's streets don't have two spaces to spare. Where a rehab needs secure storage, a 10 foot box in a rear yard with alley access is sometimes possible; otherwise the materials stay in the house behind a locked door, and the container goes on the jobs that have a lot.

Downtown, the Courthouse and the Station

The blocks around the courthouse are the busiest commercial district in the county, and the work there is conversions: an old office building becoming apartments, a bank branch becoming a restaurant, the floors above a Main Street storefront coming back into use after decades empty. Those jobs have loading zones instead of lots, so the dumpster is a short rental timed to the demolition and placed where the building's manager and the municipality allow, and the container, if there's room for one, sits in a rear lot or a leased parking space. The transportation center and the county buildings bring their own rules about trucks and hours, and a delivery to a Main Street address at the morning rush is a delivery that waits.

Downtown also means the municipality's own calendar: parades on Main Street, festivals at the riverfront park, events at the zoo and in the parks. Those need units in clusters with an accessible unit in each, hand wash stations by the food, and a service plan for anything that runs a full day. The organizer handles the municipality's event approvals; we handle the units and the cleanup box.

East and West Norriton: The Driveway Jobs

Cross into East Norriton or West Norriton and the work changes shape. The streets are postwar single-family, the lots have driveways, and the jobs are additions, kitchens, roof tear-offs and basement finishes with a 20 yard box in the driveway and a 10 foot container beside the garage. No street permit applies to anything on the lot, and the only planning is the approach: a tree limb over the driveway, a steep apron, a basketball hoop, a gate the truck can't clear. Walk the route the truck will take from the street to the spot and tell us what's in the way; a roll-off truck needs a straight run and clear height to tilt its bed, and a container truck needs about the box's length again beyond the landing spot.

The commercial strips along Germantown Pike and Ridge Pike, and the office and medical buildings near the hospital, are parking-lot placements with a property manager's rules, the same as King of Prussia. Both pikes are state roads, so nothing sits in their right-of-way under any local permit, and a box behind the building is the answer. Our King of Prussia page covers how those lot placements work in more detail; the approach is the same here.

Norristown FAQ

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Norristown?

On your own lot, no street permit applies. In the street, the practical rules are the municipality's: the hauler has to hold a Norristown hauler license, nothing can block snow removal after a storm, and any work that opens the street needs a Public Works permit. Tell us the address and we'll sort out the placement before you order.

Does my dumpster company need a Norristown hauler license?

Yes. Norristown's Solid Waste chapter requires a municipal hauler license, with a permit for each truck, for anyone transporting waste generated in the municipality, construction and demolition debris included. Roll-off and dumpster trucks are covered under it.

What size dumpster fits on a Norristown rowhome street?

A 10 or 20 yard box, which takes about one parking space. A 30 yard box is too long for most blocks, and a 40 doesn't belong on a rowhome street. Sort heavy debris into a 10 and the rest into a 20 if the job has both.

Do you cover East Norriton and West Norriton?

Yes. The townships on either side of Norristown are on our routes, and their driveways and parking lots make placement simple. Each township has its own rules for its own streets, separate from Norristown's.
