Porta Potty, Dumpster & Storage Container Rental in Cheltenham, Jenkintown & Abington

The first suburbs north of the city line along Old York Road were built as the railroad suburbs of the 1890s and the streetcar suburbs of the 1920s, and that's what they still are: Elkins Park, Melrose Park, Wyncote and Glenside with their big old houses on tree-lined streets, Jenkintown's small-borough downtown, Cheltenham's twins and rows nearer the city, and Abington's postwar neighborhoods and the hospital and shopping corridor beyond. The work is renovation of houses that have earned it, and the placement is usually a driveway under old trees. Cheltenham Township's code has a specific permit for a box that has to go in the street; Jenkintown and Abington each run their own. We deliver porta potties, roll-off dumpsters and storage containers across all three, on one quote and one invoice.

Where We Work Along Old York Road

The Work That Keeps These Towns Busy

  • Renovating the Big Old Houses

Slate roofs, plaster walls, kitchens that haven't been touched since the 1970s, and owners who are restoring rather than replacing. A 30 yard box on swaps, a container for the millwork and fixtures, and a porta potty out of sight behind the garage.

  • Twins, Rows & Flips

Cheltenham Village and the blocks near the city line, where investors and first-time buyers are renovating twins and rows on tighter lots. A 20 yard box in the driveway or, failing that, in the street under the township permit.

  • Hospital, Campus & Commercial

Abington's hospital district, the colleges and schools on the old estates, the congregations and the Old York Road offices, with placements the facilities office assigns and deliveries timed to the building's hours.

Cheltenham's Street Permit, and Two Other Rule Books

Cheltenham Township's code deals with a dumpster in the street in its streets and sidewalks chapter. A permit may be issued only when the applicant can't place the box on private property; the application goes to the Township Manager at the Township Building; and the box has to meet the Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Code and the township's traffic code, be no bigger than 8 feet by 20 feet, be lighted or reflectorized or marked with lighted barricades, and not block sight distance at an intersection. It can't sit within 15 feet of a fire hydrant or within 50 feet of a railroad track, which matters along the SEPTA lines that run through the township. The applicant gives the township the dumpster company's name and phone number, the permit runs 15 days, and the Director of Public Works can order a box out within 24 hours if it turns out to be a hazard even with a permit. Jenkintown Borough and Abington Township are separate municipalities with their own codes and offices, so a box in one of their streets is a question for that office. Most jobs in all three never reach the street: the driveway is the placement. Old York Road, Easton Road, Cheltenham Avenue, Church Road, Washington Lane and the other state routes are PennDOT's, so nothing sits in their right-of-way under any local permit. Tell us the address and we'll tell you which case you're in. See Dumpster Rental in Philadelphia for sizes, and add a porta potty and a storage container on the same quote.

Old Houses, Old Trees, Old Driveways

The houses that make Elkins Park and Wyncote worth renovating were built when a driveway was for a carriage. A hundred years later the drive is still narrow, it curves, it passes under the branches of trees older than the house, and it ends at a garage the owners park in front of. A roll-off truck needs a straight run, clear height to raise its bed and firm ground under the box, and it gets maybe one of the three on a drive like that. Before the delivery date, walk the drive from the street looking for branches below about 14 feet, a gate or a wall at the entrance, a grade change where a long truck would scrape, and pavers or a lawn edge the box's corner would crush. Tell us what you see and we'll confirm the approach or send the driver to look first.

When the drive won't take a 30, the answers are a 20 at the top of the drive near the street, plywood or mats under the box to protect pavers, or a placement across the lawn in dry weather with the owner's blessing. A container is the same calculation with more length: a 20 foot box needs about its own length again beyond the landing spot for the truck to slide it off, and a 10 foot box fits where a 20 won't.

The slate roof deserves its own note. A slate tear-off is heavy, far heavier than shingles, and a 20 yard box full of slate can be over the weight a truck can legally lift. We size roofing boxes here for weight, not volume, and a 10 yard heavy-debris box filled to its line beats a 20 that can't leave.

Jenkintown: A Borough in a Half Square Mile

Jenkintown is one of the smallest boroughs in the county and one of the densest, a real downtown on Old York Road with storefronts, restaurants and offices, and residential blocks behind it where the houses sit close and parking is on the street. The commercial work is fit-outs and conversions in buildings with no lot, so the dumpster is a short rental in a loading zone or a rear alley, placed where the borough and the landlord allow, and the container, when there's room, sits in a leased space behind the building. The residential work is renovation of older houses with a driveway when you're lucky and a street placement under the borough's rules when you're not.

The borough's own calendar brings the downtown's events: street festivals, the holiday season on Old York Road, school and parish fairs. Those need a handful of units in clusters, an accessible unit in each, hand wash stations by the food, and a pickup the morning after. The organizer handles the borough's event approvals; we handle the units and the cleanup box.

Abington: The Hospital, the Corridor and the Neighborhoods

Abington Township is bigger and newer than its neighbors to the south, with postwar neighborhoods in Roslyn, Rydal, Meadowbrook and Willow Grove's southern edge, the hospital and its medical buildings, and the Old York Road corridor of shopping centers, dealers and offices. The residential work is additions, kitchens, roofs and basements with a 20 yard box in a straight suburban driveway and a 10 foot container beside the garage, the easiest placement on this page. The commercial work is lot and dock placements on a property manager's clock, with the state road out front off limits.

The hospital district runs on a facilities office's rules, with deliveries timed to the campus's hours and placements the office assigns, often a service yard away from patient traffic. The same holds for the schools and colleges on the old estates across all three municipalities: tell us who runs the property and we'll set the delivery to their schedule. Our King of Prussia page covers how those placements work on a big campus; the approach is the same here.

Cheltenham, Jenkintown & Abington FAQ

Do I need a permit for a dumpster in Cheltenham?

In the street, yes, and only if the box can't go on private property: a permit from the Township Manager, with the box no bigger than 8 by 20 feet, lighted or reflectorized, clear of hydrants and railroad tracks, for 15 days. On your own driveway or lot no street permit applies.

Can a roll-off truck get up an old Elkins Park driveway?

Often, with planning. Walk the drive looking for branches below about 14 feet, a narrow entrance, a sharp grade and pavers the box corner would crush, and tell us what you see. A 20 near the street or mats under the box solve most of it.

Are Jenkintown and Abington under Cheltenham's rules?

No. Jenkintown Borough and Abington Township are separate municipalities with their own codes and offices. A box in one of their streets is a question for that office; a box on your own lot in any of the three needs no street permit.

What about a slate roof tear-off?

Slate is heavy. We size roofing boxes here for weight, not volume: a 10 yard heavy-debris box filled to its line, swapped as needed, rather than a 20 that's too heavy to lift legally.
