Two numbers drive the count: how many people, and how long they stay. A three-hour block party and an all-day festival with the same headcount need very different setups, and alcohol pushes the count higher because guests use the restroom more often. Lines bunch up at predictable moments, right after the ceremony, between sets, at the finish line, so plan for the rush instead of the average, and put units where the crowd already is rather than where there's a convenient corner.

Portable toilets at a public event in Philadelphia need a Portable Chemical Toilet permit from the Department of Public Health's Environmental Health Services, and a unit in a residential area has to be serviced at least every 48 hours. The Office of Special Events is the city's one-stop shop for street festivals, parades, runs and outdoor concerts, and an event with 50 or more people in a city park, field or rec center goes through Parks & Recreation's Large Event and Festival permit as well. A luxury restroom trailer replaces a row of units with something guests don't mind using: flushing toilets, vanity sinks with running water, mirrors, lighting and heat or air conditioning, in separate men's and women's sides. A two-station trailer covers a small wedding; bigger guest lists get more stations or a second trailer. Trailers need a level spot, a path wide enough to tow them in and, for the larger ones, an outlet or a generator, so tell us about the driveway and the gate when you ask for the quote.

Every festival ends with a pile. A 10 or 20 yard dumpster dropped the morning of the event and pulled the next day takes the cleanup off the organizer's plate, and a storage container on site holds staging, tables and signage between a multi-day event's sessions.
